When Ron Whitcomb completed his senior season of high school football at East Rochester in 2001, he was named one of the top players in the state.
"Honestly, I ended up as the all-time leading passer in Section V and Maine was my only scholarship offer," Whitcomb said. "I look back and sympathize with players in Rochester.
"I definitely think I could've played at a higher level or merited more offers than one."
It turns out that Whitcomb, now 30 years old, would appreciate Maine's offer. The 2002 East Rochester graduate became Maine's all-time leader in touchdown passes. He also developed relationships with the late Jeff Cole, who recruited Whitcomb, and others, which led to his current job.
